“Love in a Headscarf” is quite an interesting book. It is a non-fiction and explains what Shelina Zahra Janmohamed goes through before she founds the One. This story is about how the author found herself, her faith, and her love, but most of all how she learnt to be her.
In the Author’s Introduction, Shelina describes “Love. Amour, ishq, hubb, amor, pyar. All these are words in my lexicon to describe something delicious and mundane, irrestible and sublime. Love inspires great actions, absurd choices can arbitrate between life and death, and it can connect the body to the soul and join them with lightning. It is the essence of the human condition”.
In the prologue, Shelina narrates that she is “keeping a very surprising story under” her scarf. She wants to fall in love. She wants “a spark” and “chemistry” with a guy preferably John Travolta.
“At the age of thirteen, I knew I was destined to marry John Travolta. One day he would arrive on my North London doorstep, fall madly in love with me and ask me to marry him. Then he would convert to Islam and become a devoted Muslim”.
She knew herself that that was only a fantasy and decided to face reality. She really wants to find Mr Right but not listening and agreeing with the Buxom Aunties means Shelina is threading a path that has never experience threading before. She is determine to follow the Islamic guidelines rather than the Asian traditions and culture and in the process discover that before she can find the One she must first find her Creator and her faith.
Shelina Zahra Janmohamed writes a column for EMEL magazine and The Muslim News and regularly contributes to the Guardian, the BBC and Channel 4. She is much in demand as a commentator on radio and television and has appeared on programmes including News night and The Heaven and Earth Show. Her award- winning blog, Spirit 21, is hugely popular. She is a graduate of New College, Oxford. She lives in London. “Love in a Headscarf” is her first book.
