Assalam alaikum,
Kindly permit me to remind us of that Hadith of the Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, in which Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said:--
''Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should
speak what is good or remain silent. Whoever believes
in Allah and the Last Day should honour his neighbour.
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honour
the guest''.
Imam Shafi'i said that this Hadith means that when you want to speak, you should reflect. If it seems to you that there is harm in it, then hold back. And al-Qushayri said, ''Silence at the proper time is the attribute of men as speech at the proper time is one of the noblest of qualities''. Ad-Daqqaq said, ''Whoever is silent about the truth ia a dumb shaytan''.
On honouring the neighbour, that is because mutual recognition begins with your neighbour whom Allah has recommended in the Book,'' and the near neighbour''--(4:36). To ignore your neighbour and honour someone else indicates that the honouring is deceit or an intention which is not good, occasioning doubt. When a person is accustomed to honour those naer him, he/she does NOT refrain from honouring distant people. In anycase, generosity is universal, so..let us honour our guests as well.
